How does Anne of Green Gables reflect the outcome of this debate? What produces Anne’s growth during the novel, and what is the influence of adults, if any?
  2. Although The Secret Garden is a realistic novel, Burnett includes the idea of Magic. What does she mean by Magic, how does it function in the story, and how does it relate to popular philosophical trends in her society?
